Community Support

The Community Service provides a wide range of support that enables clients to live as independently as possible, while promoting and supporting educational, recreational, employment and social opportunities utilising community based facilities. This support is an essential part of the 'Moving On' policy that aims to increase the self-value of the client and to reduce dependence on Headway services.

The Community Services Co-ordinator will also organise: -
  • Home visits
  • Monthly carers support meetings
  • Family support
  • Advice and information
  • Crisis intervention
  • Benefit and housing advice
  • Liaison with other agencies
  • Advocacy
  • Basic counselling

There are no charges for this specialised support, but due to limited resources, the Community Services Co-ordinator will prioritise by providing emergency support, when needed, first. Occasionally non-emergency support appointments may be re-arranged. People seeking further advice and information are encouraged to meet at the Centre, if possible, saving time on travelling.

To supplement and increase the range of support offered to clients Headway South Beds also actively recruits Community Volunteers for the following: -
  • Social activities
  • Sport and leisure pursuits
  • Shopping trips
  • Befriending
  • Appointment support
  • Essential transport
  • Trips into the wider community

Volunteering Opportunities :

All of Headway's volunteers are highly regarded and are essential to the successful delivery of all the services. Volunteers are C.R.B. checked, have a full induction, and are given on-going relevant training for their particular role. For one or two hours, or even one or two days per week; your time will be enjoyably spent making a difference to people's lives. All volunteers are carefully selected and their personal skills are matched to specific job roles or individual clients. There are no upper age limits; in fact we welcome mature volunteers who can bring a wealth of personal experience into the team. The wide band of volunteer experience stretches from students to retired social workers, housewives to businessmen. We also welcome the diversity of all ethnic groups and cultures, and especially anyone willing to commit their time and skills to improving the quality of life of our clients. Volunteers are fully reimbursed for all agreed out-of-pocket expenditure and mileage. To become a volunteer simply contact the Community Services Co-ordinator and you will be sent an application form. Please note that prior to a C.R.B. check (approximately two months) no volunteer may work unsupervised.

Community Support for Family and/or Carers :

Headway South Bedfordshire aims to provide support for the families and/or carers. Often they are in as much, and at times more, need of support, advice and basic counselling than the client. Headway recognises the vital role carers play in supporting people. We provide regular meetings for carers to share information and support each other, as well as organising an occasional guest speaker. There is a nominal donation for refreshments but no charge for attending. For further information regarding dates, venue and agenda please contact the Community Services Co-ordinator.
